Virginia to the rescue! |
Something quite extraordinary happened on my recovery from the mean girl troll experience.
Blogger extraordinairre, The Bloggess, is harnessing virtual energy and changing lives $30 bucks at a time. This is not a movie. This is real cash making a real difference in real lives. Talk about pay it forward – it’s all happening right now, with people lining up to give, and receive.
I first heard about it on Twitter, and by the time I got to her site – wow, the power of a mom with a mission.
Social media is truly social – and powerful and touching – as I recently discovered in my own little corner of the blogosphere.
An unexpected email from a stranger in Virginia landed in my inbox while I was simultaneously being slammed by angry feminists. But instead of more hate mail, I received instead this heartfelt message from a reader many states away:
“I follow your blog Diary of a return to work mom. I was reading your post about the banana suit earlier this month and meant to send you a message and realized I forgot with all of my running around with my kids. I was wondering if you have the banana suit already? My middle child, 11 year old, has the banana suit and wore it this year for Halloween. It is in excellent to brand new condition. If you don’t mind a once used suit, I am more than happy to send it to you at no cost. I have already asked my daughter and she said she would be glad to send it to him. She thought it would be cool to be someone else’s Santa.”
Talk about Santa’s elves. For real.
And then it happened.
I received a perfect banana suit from an 11-year-old girl in Virginia. For free. All because a little girl wanted to be kind, and her generous mom, completely swamped with the same December pressures as I, plus more kids with more issues and a freak snowstorm as well, took the time to write, then find and package a silly costume, make the trip to the post office, pay the postage, and send us a banana suit. Because of a blog.
For someone they didn’t know and expecting nothing in return.
Because they read something I wrote. Wow.
Do something nice for someone. Today.
Will do!
Went out to the blog you mentioned. Powerful. Outta tissues.
Awesome all of it! Thanks for sharing.
Wow, that is amazing. Good for you and for everyone who is generous.
That is awesome!!!! It’s fun to pay-it-forward, like on the bridge– fast food line (if the bill isn’t too high), etc.
I know! Cool stuff happening over at Aiming Low as well: http://tinyurl.com/239hm3j
