Talking the Talk and Walking the Walk

September 15, 2014 by Kate Mayer 3 Comments

Kate Mayer at Moms Demand Walkway Over the Hudson 2014So guess what I did this weekend? I closed my eyes, and jumped. You gotta start somewhere, so I started this weekend.

I took my one-woman, unaffiliated, non-partisan GVP (gun violence prevention) show on the road, and spoke about life as I live it in Newtown, Connecticut at the 2nd Annual Walk Over The Hudson for Gun Sense, sponsored by the hard working advocates from upstate New York chapter of Moms Demand Action and New York Against Gun Violence.

So proud to have huge Newtown Sandy Hook presence at the march in Poughkeepsie, and it was a beautiful day to be high above the Hudson.

The best part is just seconds in: the videographer (Boy) gets a little testy about visibility.

The real story, is below the video. Read on.

I can’t seem to hit “publish.” I’ve had this post ready to go, my very first one at the new site, yet can’t hit submit. I’m afraid. The haters and hoaxers are brutal, and while I’m learning SEO and how to tag correctly to be found on the web, I’m not so sure I want to be found. “Newtown resident speaks at Moms Demand gun safety rally in Poughkeepsie New York” and whammo – duck and cover. Punny, right?

But here it goes.

Thanks for hitting “public,” Kathryn, and thanks so much for sharing your words with all of us. I know it’s hard, but you are doing GREAT. Skip the incendiary comments, which are always written with an agenda or from a place of utter ignorance, and embrace the people who I know will be kind enough to let you know how important your voice is here.

About Kathryn Mayer

Kathryn Mayer

An irreverent storyteller with a foul mouth and big heart, Kathryn Mayer (aka Kathy and/or Kate) is a writer, humorist, and (former) activist writing out loud with humor and grace about little life moments with big ripples, including the space between parenting and aging parents, social issues, angsty reflections of midlife, and, sigh, gun humpers. Still. Sometimes a big deal, sometimes not Mayer is a national award-winning columnist, according to the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, and her essays have been recognized as Voice of … Read More Here...
