How to call congress about anything

March 4, 2015 by Kate Mayer 3 Comments

Calling congress is easy to doGOOD NEWS!! Bipartisan federal legislation has been reintroduced for federal background checks on all gun sales, even those sneaky ones at gun shows, on the internet, and in the Pennysaver. (Am I dating myself? Or is Craigslist the new Pennysaver?) Either way, you want a firearm, you gotta pass a background check. Duh.

Got a problem with that? Many paranoid patriots will, make no mistake about it: they’ll work like crazy to stop it dead. Again.

So watcha gonna do? Who you gonna call? CONGRESS.

Call, it’s not so different from ordering a cheese pizza, I swear it is. Ain’t nothing to be afraid of; these people work for you. “We the People,” remember? Here’s how:

Don’t know who? Don’t be embarrassed, find out. Here’s a simple link: plug in your zip code and you’re good to go with names, emails, tel numbers, the works.

Here’s an idea: add your representatives phone numbers to your cell, then call them weekly. Remind them who you are and what you want.

Follow Brady’s Campaign, Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly’s ARS, Everytown, or any of the national gun violence prevention groups (Moms, CSGV, Newtown Action Alliance, SHP, Enough, CT Against Gun Violence – your state has its own – I don’t care who, just pick one). They’ll give you tips and links to call, petition, email, and text, tweet or whatnot your representative. They make it very very easy.

Then do it. Call. Don’t be intimidated.

UPDATE 2018: The good citizens of Brenham Community Center in Brenham Texas reached out with this terrific resource, How Youth Can Reach Out to Congress.  So happy to include it here, and even happier that kids are getting involved to help fix what’s broken. Can’t wait until they can vote!

About Kathryn Mayer

Kathryn Mayer

An irreverent storyteller with a foul mouth and big heart, Kathryn Mayer (aka Kathy and/or Kate) is a writer, humorist, and (former) activist writing out loud with humor and grace about little life moments with big ripples, including the space between parenting and aging parents, social issues, angsty reflections of midlife, and, sigh, gun humpers. Still. Sometimes a big deal, sometimes not Mayer is a national award-winning columnist, according to the National Society of Newspaper Columnists, and her essays have been recognized as Voice of … Read More Here...
